What are the implications for Academic Registrars, Student
Records Officers and other administrators of the inclusion of the
Transcript as a key section of the new student Progress File?
Following the policy statement published by CVCP in May 2000,
SROC is sponsoring a major national one-day conference to
explain and explore what the Progress File is, and the
administrative and computing support it will require. Speakers will
include: -
+ Dr Angela Smallwood, Manager of the Personal and Academic
Records (PARS) project, who will explain the rationale for the
Progress File proposed by Lord Dearing and how it has been
developed at Nottingham University;
+ Paul Drummond, manager of the same project at Newcastle, will
demonstrate the Internet PARS software that supplies transcript
data for the Progress File which students complete.
+ Prof. Nick Harris from QAA will review the development of the
Progress File and its place among the national policy initiatives
which are intended to make the outcomes of learning more explicit;
+ Dr Jim Parry and Peter Rees Jones will review the University of
Leeds policy and guidelines for good practice, which will require all
students to be offered a Progress File by 2002 entry and discuss
how the University is addressing implementation issues.
+ There will be discussion of different approaches to the Progress
File, including its integration with personal tutorial systems;
+ A secure electronic Transcript system will be demonstrated.
The session will be introduced by Prof. John Macklin, PVC for
Learning and Teaching at Leeds, and will end with a discussion of
how administrators may foster these developments and the support
networks that are available to administrators to help them in this
task.
The aims of the day are to: -
+ Brief you about the Progress File;
+ Illustrate and discuss some of the approaches which are already
being developed;
+ Put you in contact with the networks which can help you
support the development of the Progress File at your institution.
The day conference will be held at the University of Leeds on
Wednesday 15 November 2000 from 10.30 a.m. until 3.30 and will
cost GBP20, including a buffet lunch.
