Leeds used to try to keep Wednesday afternoon's free of teaching,
but formally agreed to remove this restriction 4 years ago because;
+ When faced with the choice between being taught on a
wednesday p.m. or a friday p.m. most students prefered to be
taught on wednesday p.m.
+ This meant that options and electives scheduled to friday p.m.
were attracting low enrolments, adversely affecting the finances of
service depts;
+ There was insufficient accommodation to schedule all classes
between 9 and 5 if both wednesday and friday p.m. were lightly
used and a strong demand from staff to minimise teaching after 5
on other nights;
+ Competitive student sports were increasingly taking place on a
national or regional basis undermining the rationale for wednesday
p.m. sport.
When we went modular in 93 we permitted the use of wednesday
p.m. for 'duplicated' classes and in 96 simply extended the
principle to all classes. PVCs have resisted the call for restoration,
which have faded away. Wednesday and Friday afternoons now
have roughly the same number of classes. Depts are under no
compulsion to teach on either afternoon but get better rooms if they
do!
