At York we do not include such an element. We annually review
load:numbers ratios for each department and as most are very close to
1.0 the 'swings and roundabouts' principle suggests there is no need to
change our practice. However, we are under pressure to introduce some
form of parent dept weighting at the postgraduate level as we move
towards modularised pgt programmes of study.
I personally prefer to keep it simple. To my mind there is consderable
virtue in having planning tools that are readily understood by staff in
academic departments....and which take relatively little time to
maintain at the centre.
