We use them as a primary screen. In your situation they will probably
perform OK, but beware that dark skin can interfere with the result. We
tried it on a Mauritian staff member with a normal bilirubin level. It gave
a result of 220 umol/L. This was about 8 yrs ago so I can't tell you the
brand we were using then.

Subject: TRANSCUTANEOUS BILIRUBINOMETRY
Does anyone out there have experience of modern hand-held transcutaneous
bilirubinometers? Our Health Authority includes some of the islands of the
west coast of Scotland .It can be very problematical transporting both
samples and babies from these locations. At the moment I am just exploring
options.
