Dear Colleagues,
We report the occurrence of red blood cell fragments (schistocytes) by
adding this information without further comments. Other labs seem to use
additional comments like +/++/+++ or fragments/per 1000 red blood cells.
Does this add any clinically useful information?
My major concern is that the (im)precision should be similar to
microscopic counting of reticulocytes (which is a well-known dilemma
when based on 1000 red blood cells). Are there any guidelines available
on the meaning (percentage?) of +/++/+++?
Thank you very much for your comments.
Sincerely,
Dr. med. Michael Steiner
