Prof. T. Reynolds,
WE tried a pathology costing package but it was rather too excessively complex for what was practically needed. I derived a simple alternative using excel which did the job pretty well.
All you need to do is have a database which can allow you to count the different sample types / requests. For each test (e.g. U&E, TSH etc.) you can assign a rough reagent cost, and an estimate of technician time required. The total 'technician units' and 'cost units' can then be divided into the total pay & non-pay costs, allowing a cost / test to be calculated. The same can be used to fiddle the costs for cervical smears if you have problems with histologist costings [a separate lie for amount of consultant input can be produced], or to lower GP skin biopsy costs - unts can be calculated in terms of number of blocks. THis has the advantages that
1) it is simple so I can understand the results
2) we derive the factors - so finance can't understande the results but believe them
3) we don't have to pay a lot for software that does everything except what we want.

Subject: ABC 2000 costing software
A very happy new year to everyone.
I would appreciate from members of the mailbase any comment good or bad on the pathology costing software ABC2000 marketed by B-Plan UK Ltd.
I've had an on-site demo which looked impressive enough but wondered if anyone was using the package in ernest.
Thanks in advance
