XML in the NHS
The eXtendable Markup Language (XML) is revolutionising the worldwide
information environment in business and knowledge management, and is
predicted to do the same in healthcare.
The Central IT Unit of the UK Cabinet Office recently issued its
e-Government Interoperability Framework, specifying the use of XML
technologies as standard across the UK public sector (including
health).
XML is already a key tool in some major projects and programmes of the
Information for Health strategy of the NHS and in the health information
standards community in the UK and worldwide.
Some impressive local results have been reported by clinical information
projects using XML. This meeting aims to capture some the big picture
and explore some challenges and controversies about how, and how soon,
XML can and should transform the way we do health informatics. For
example:
ß Does XML solve the problem of health information standards? Is it now
a key part of the solution? Which uses of XML in healthcare is it
worthwhile to standardise now?
ß Should the NHS migrate its current major clinical message projects
from EDIFACT to XML formats now? If not now, when?
ß How does the advent of XML alter the options and routes to
implementing EPRs and EHRs?
ß Is XML putting us on a path to making health knowledge resources
(prescribing information; clinical guidelines) connectable with patient
information and with each other?
ß How relevant is the e-Government initiative to managing information in
healthcare?
The conference does not assume prior knowledge or experience of working
with XML. The contributions by national domain experts and project
leaders will help you learn more about XML itself, as well as about the
issues which XML raises.
