I am currently reviewing our risk assessments for storing and using compressed gas cylinders. In an ideal world these would of course all be stored outside of the laboratory and piped in for use; however as we are on level 5 of our block (with a flat roof on one side, and a car park on the other) we are currently forced to store 'in use' cylinders in the lab.
I have large amounts of information from the HSE, the BCGA (British Compressed Gas Association), and our suppliers, all of which is very good, but does tend to assume the ideal world above.
Do any readers of the Mailbase have experience of practical solutions to the above, with reference to nationally agreed standards ?
I am particularly concerned about securing cylinders, and protection of valves and gas lines.
We are using Acetylene, Hydrogen, Helium, Nitrogen & Air.
