Hi.
Look for publications by Herve Bocherens, Universite de Paris VI. He does
isotope analyses of bone. Also, B. McFadden reconstructed equid dietary
habits from isotopic analyses in prehistoric samples in Texas, don't have
the ref. with me unfortunately... Also see pubs by A de Ricqles and his
research group at Universite de Paris VII (paleontological) they are
studying histology and growth rates in dinosaurs and may have something on
chem. analysis.
Here's a dating/diagenesis reference or two he may be interested in:
Johnsson, M. (1997) "Chemical dating of bones based on diagenetic
changes in bone apatite." JAS 24(5):431-438.
Koch, P.L., Tuross, N., Fogel, M.L. (1997) "The effects of sample
treatment and diagenesis on the isotopic integrity of carbonate in
biogenic hydroxyapatite." JAS 24(5):417-430.
Schoeniger, M.J. & Moore, K. (1992) "Bone stable isotope studies in
archaeology". Journal of World Prehistory
And more recent than your friend is interested in but re:diagenetic
change:
Price, T.D., Blitz, J., Burton, J. & Ezzo, J.A. (1992) "Diagenesis in
prehistoric bone: problems and solutions." J.A.S. 19:513-529
Nicholson, R.A. (1998) "Bone degradation in a compost
heap." J.A.S. 25:393-404.
Best of luck.
