International e-Workshop: Developing On-Line Tutors
--- 8 - 12 May 2000 ---
Developments in communications and information technology are creating
radical changes for
teaching and learning in Higher Education. The global nature of on-line
tutoring creates new
possibilities, new demands and the need for new methods of working. The
challenges we face are in
understanding the extent to which the traditional methods of
face-to-face tutoring map to the new
demands that are placed upon the on-line tutor, and the extent to which
we have the vision to
create effective new methods.
You are invited to join an international e-Workshop of academics,
educators, staff developers and
free thinkers, experienced in on-line learning, to focus on the issues
involved and make a
strategic contribution to the way in which the new methods are shaped.
The output of the
e-Workshop will be a widely-disseminated compendium of illustrative case
studies and practical
guidelines and strategies for tutors and staff developers working in the
global on-line
environment.
To be considered for participation, you should submit a short but
descriptive practical case
study of your own experience with on-line learning by 2 April (see
guidelines and template
below). You should also be available to contribute to the e-Workshop
between 8-12 May.
For full details of the e-Workshop see below or at
http://otis.scotcit.ac.uk/e-Workshop.

-- e-Workshop Aims --
· to develop an on-line book of examples of international good practice
in on-line tutoring and
the training of on-line tutors,
· to exchange experiences of on-line tutoring and identify common themes
and cultural
differences,
· to establish a network to support future exchange, development and
collaboration.
-- e-Workshop Publications --
In addition to the e-Workshop report, we intend to publish the results
of the e-Workshop in one
or all of the following formats: E-journal special issue, resource pack,
and book. The
e-Workshop and publications will be structured around two themes:
· Tutor Guidelines - how to be a successful on-line tutor,
· Staff Development Guidelines - how to train on-line tutors.
-- e-Workshop Participation --
The e-Workshop will be limited to 30 delegates, and participation is by
invitation. If you are an
experienced individual who can bring that experience to bear in helping
to develop effective
on-line tutors you are invited to submit a case study addressing either
of the e-Workshop
themes. Your experience will be of value to your peers and all
contributions will be fully
acknowledged.
-- Case Study --
Please submit a case study (3 pages max) by 2 April 2000. All
submissions will be reviewed by an
International Selection Committee. Selected participants will be invited
to take part in the
on-line international e-Workshop from 8-12 May 2000. You will be
expected to participate actively
in the e-Workshop and be available on-line to discuss your case study
and comment on other
contributions (10-15 hours over 5 days).
The case study should include contact details, your institution/company,
and a brief summary of
your experience of supporting on-line learners and a description of:
- the subject matter (generic, discipline/subject specific),
- the context/instructional setting (country, educational system,
institution, etc),
- the target audience (undergraduate, postgraduate, staff, professional
development),
- the learners (type, numbers, location),
- the pedagogical goals and approach,
- the materials and methods used,
- the tutors'/learners' prior experience,
- the case study (why, execution, support, barriers, enablers),
- how other staff developers/academics can reproduce the
technique/method and applicability to
other disciplines,
- the evidence you will be able to provide to demonstrate the success of
the technique (eg,
examples, data from feedback, research findings, evaluation studies).
- the quality assurance and the integration of your tutoring experiences
into the culture of your
organisation.
