Both physical and economic risks in the workplace, including educational
settings, continue to rise. A beginning solution is a more meticulous
screening of new job applicants. We have developed two pertinent tests
designed for inclusion in the interview process. They are also meant as aids
in evaluating existing employees who seem to need attention. The first is a
set of "rule-out" questions for an immediate identification of a potential
hire who may mean trouble or lack of performance. The second is a drug-abuse
questionnaire with tough questions to be asked in eye-to-eye contact. Other
than a urine test, we know of no other questionnaire as effective. Third, we
have checklists for secret child abuse and unrecognized domestic violence.
