Press Release
The Gift
By Nicola Baldwin
ICA, Carlton Terrace,The Mall, London.
Monday 27 March 2000
7.15pm
The audience will be 'Creating the Debate' when Y Touring
Theatre Company, funded by the Wellcome Trust and the
Office of Science and Technology, bring their innovative
theatre of debate programme, THE GIFT, to the ICA.
Y Touring is one of the country's leading theatre companies
and has developed a formidable reputation for both
commissioning and producing original plays by
contemporary writers with the aim of challenging, provoking
and exciting their audience. The Gift is no exception -
dealing with the dilemmas that genetic selection and the
new genetics pose for all of us.
The Gift, Y Touring's ground breaking play about one
family's struggle with their genetic inheritance, looks at
the moral dilemmas and difficult choices that genetics
poses for us all.
"Theatre of Science at its very best" Professor Lewis
Wolpert.
''Unusual for the sophistication of its blending of arts
and science'' Robin McKie in The Observer.
''The Gift is a strongly characterised, constantly
challenging piece of theatre'' Lyn Gardner in The
Guardian.
''I was staggered by the amount of relevant information
that was conveyed in The Gift.'' Bernadette Modell.
Professor of Community Genetics, Royal free and the
UCL Medical Schools
The Gift is followed by a live and often heated debate
between the characters and the audience. The play and
debate provide an accessible and effective forum for the
audience to discuss the scientific, social and moral issues
surrounding genetics.
The Gift is on a national tour, from 24th January - 31st
March 2000. It is the third tour of a three-year programme,
Creating the Debate for the New Millennium, which consists
of six national tours, of four productions plus a television
drama which was shown on BBC TV's Learning Zone in
October 1999. Through Creating the Debate for the New
Millennium Y Touring Theatre Company, the Wellcome
Trust, and the Office of Science & Technology aim to create
informed debate on the power and potential impact of
advances in genetic technology.
Book directly through the ICA Box Office on
020 7930 3647.
