So far as I am aware, there is indeed no such database - at least, not
publicly available.
To the best of my knowledge, the most comprehensive monitoring of science
broadcasting output in Europe is probably that carried out by the BBC and by
CNRS Images/Media in France. However, there also exist a number of published
studies which contain survey information on science broadcasting at least in
Western Europe, notably 2 articles in Public Understanding of Science Vol. 5
(1996); Suzanne de Cheveigne & Eliseo Veron, 'Science on TV: Forms and
Reception of Science Programmes on French Television' (pp. 231-253) and
Winfried Gopfert, 'Scheduled Science: TV Coverage of Science, Technology,
Medicine & Social Science and Programming Policies in Britain and Germany'
(pp. 361-374). The end-notes to these articles also contain many useful
references to earlier published work in this field.
Finally, there also exists quite an extensive comparative study of science
broadcasting in several Western European countries by 2 former staff of the
British Film Institute Research Dept., Geraldine Fitzgerald and someone else
(an American), which I believe had been published somewhere at some time
since 1997, but I don't know exactly when or where! Geraldine F. is no
longer with the B.F.I., but she is now a radio producer, mainly of science
programmes, for BBC Radio 4, and can be contacted via the BBC Radio Science
Unit.

Subject: European science TV programmes
Hello all
Plea for help.....
Does anyone know of a database/list of science TV programmes covering Europe
(EU or beyond - I don't mind in the absence of anything so far). Commercial
media database systems such as P180 and Mediadisk have proved pretty
disappointing. There is a European equivalent to the Blue Book of British
Broadcasting (and whose title evades me at the moment) but it lists
corporate information for broadcasters and little or no specific information
(and certainly no contacts) for content. Clearly it's unrealistic to expect
to trace all the independent production companies, but I'm still hopeful
that somebody somewhere knows.....
All ideas gratefully received.
