The Life and Times of Sir Clement Le Neve Foster
1841 1904 by Tony Oldham. Published privately. 98 pp
14 plates. £3.00
This is a handy little A5 paperback describing a
little known mining engineer. His appointment as one
of the first inspectors of metalliferous mines did
much to improve the working conditions. Fluent in
both French and German, he studied abroad and
introduced many new innovations to British Mining such
as steel roof supports and a drilling rig. His
untimely death at the age of 63 was the result of
being gassed whilst investigating a fatal accident in
the Snaefell Mine on the Isle of Man.
