I know that a lot of people who knew him will be sad to hear that Adrian
Mellor died yesterday, after a long period of cancer. He died
peacefully on Sunday at the Marie Curie Hospice in Liverpool.
Adrian was one of the loveliest people I ever knew with the media and
cultural studies field. By all reports, he was a great teacher, because
he always had such enthusiasm for the field he was involved in. A man
of enormous warmth and keen eye, he could spot rubbish at four hundred
paces. I knew him first when we worked together on the Magazine of
Cultural Studies, for which Adrian took on the onerous task of being
Treasurer. He was a joy to have at meetings, because he laughed so much
and richly. He then became our external examiner at Bristol. Through
all this, he became a good friend, whom I feel honoured to have known.
I don't know any details yet about the funeral, but I do know that
Judith, Euan and Tseringhave asked that anyone who wants to mark
Adrian's death should send a donation to the Marie Curie Hospice. If I
manage to get the address to this, I will post it.
This is goodbye to one exceptional guy.
