We have decided to create a separate catalogue record for every 'version' of
a journal we have access to. We concluded that the print and electronic
versions are sufficiently different to warrant a record each. We have then
used MARC 787 (Related title) to create a suitable cross reference to the
alternative version.
We have also decided to create separate records for each electronic version,
i.e. from Ingenta, Ebsco, NESLI, Catchword etc. Again we concluded that
each version was sufficiently distinct to warrant its own record. Unique
fields were MARC 542 for access information (we've included authentication
details here), 773 for host (e.g. Ebsco Online) and 856 for URL.
Interestingly, full-text holdings can differ between the various hosts, so
this is another point of difference.
Of course, all of this is a lot of work. We feel however, that its worth it
in the end. It can be useful to be able to access a journal from various
hosts, e.g. where there is server downtime, and alternative can be used.
