Just dug out my DVD of "Crash", intrigued by our exchange. The
fetishization of the motorcar is brilliantly handled, in perfect Freudian
fashion (with a fetish being defined as a narrowing of one's sexual focus in
order to maximize control0.
The ending is searing. Ballard gets Vaughn's car out of the junk yard,
and gets it running again. He crashes into his wife's Miata, forcing her
off the road and into a rollover. When she says she's alright, his response
is "Maybe next time, darling...maybe next time."
The death instinct has never been given a more eloquent expression.
