WF Workshop 30 1 2000
Met Upstairs, Churchills, Mount Pleasant, London W C 1. Afterwards, one of
those present said "I think that's one of the best workshops there's ever
been."
Wayne Clements presented a 3 minute tape piece called "Change the record" -
rather fine. Some discussion followed & all encouraged him to do more work
in that line. NB Wayne's visual poetry is included in the still-delayed Spad
# 4.
Adrian Clarke tried out a section of his contribution-in-progress to the 4th
Sub Voicive Colloquium [20th May 2000, London - see SVP website for
available details] - very difficult to sum up... a reworking, quotation
from, commentary upon Dante's Purgatorio # 28...
Mike Weller read a barmy funny story. Later he performed a sound / text
piece that was accomplished and amusing. NB Mike Weller performs at SVP on
7th March 2000
Sean Bonney read further from his current work-in-progress.
Lawrence Upton read his three poems included in Masthead #4 (from
Australia), copies of which have arrived in UK - Alaric Sumner has copies:
see his recent posts... All three poems had been presented at earlier
workshops in earlier forms.... There had been a lot of cutting and a slowing
up since then. The "Cartoon" was, in its first detailed draft, read at
hectic speed. Upton also showed his "Rilke diptych" as published in Filling
Station # 16 (from Canada). Later he read a further section from
"Networking", the next in "series" to his "huming / queuing" (Writers Forum)
Bob Cobbing read _Tom Poems_ . Some discussion followed. Later Cobbing and
Upton performed the theme (made by Cobbing) and then the central spread
(made by Upton) from "wingless flies", the latest pamphlet of "Domestic
Ambient Noise" to be published.
Later still Cobbing Upton and Weller performed from Cobbing's "Towards
Design in Poetry for and by? Eric Mottram" to which I referred in my
introduction to Cobbing's Mottram Celebration on 18th January 2000, copied
to britpo. This was the first time any of it has been performed and the
performance may have left something to be desired! 3 different approaches
which came together during the course of the performance; but it is a
workshop. For the record, the first page past the centre spread.
Jeff Hilson read a varied selection of poems. He seems to have kept his
poetry rather to himself, which is a pity - there is one of his poems in the
aforementioned Spad # 4
Later Hilson, Bonney and Weller performed from a text made by Hilson. It had
3 elements which were passed from one to the other so that each performed
each element. A gentle and quiet piece with a great deal of variety.
The next is in two weeks' time - 12th February 2000 I think. Same address.
Meet in the bar around 3.30 p.m.. All with like interests are welcome. It's
a nuisance sometimes giving up a chunk of a Saturday, but as a regular
contributor I can assure you that the returns in learning are significant.
