Listening to many speeches throughout the last few months, I had hoped that
the year 2000 would be peaceful because all the airheads had gone forward to
the 21st century whilst the rest of us could just let things tick-tock at
their normal rate. One knew that the century would be in a complete mess by
the time we caught up; but at least we'd have had a bollocks free year.
Imagine my disappointment when I turned on a tv and then a radio on 1st
January and found that no one had gone into the 21st century; and, as well
as that, they are all insisting that they are in the 21st century - just as
the same bunch of psychotics claim to live in freedom and democracy, to be
making available new money, to be helping the disadvantaged etc.
Yesterday, Radio 4 broadcast "Poetry 2000" - all sorts of claims for it,
