Dear colleague,
Attached you will find a summary of the reactions we received after
asking advice in designing a protocol for tests in patients with total
parenteral nutrition.
A number of colleagues have provided with -sometimes highly
sophisticated and elaborate- protocols. Thanks again.
The summary is limited to the first, unstable period. In a later
stable period, usually less testing is needed. A number of
collegues indicate tests as 'optional'. These, have been excluded
because it is our view that in principle all lab tests are optional,
provided there is a sound reason for requesting them. Sometimes it
is indicated that several depts. within the same hospital differ in
testing protocols. Some separate protocols for enteral nutrition
were sent; I have omitted these because they too few for
comparison.
The wide variety of tests and testing frequency is apparent, and
possibly reflects the different levels of local concern for the wellfare
of the patient. However, in some cases there seems to be a certain
amount of overtesting.
Every hospital that reacted is indicated by a letter from the
alphabet (contributions from the UK, USA, Australia and The
Netherlands).
Please note that there are two pages to the Excel file, presenting
the same data in different ways.
Best regards,
Raymond Wulkan
