The Institute for the Advancement of University
Learning

The University of Oxford aims to achieve excellence in
every area of its teaching and research, maintaining and
developing its historical position as a world-class
university. The Institute for the Advancement of
University Learning is being founded to further the
University's long-standing commitment to challenging
and rigorous teaching enriched by interaction with the
research environment. It will do so by conducting
research to enhance understanding of the learning needs
of high-achieving students and promoting practitioner
research into learning and teaching within the University;
by providing development opportunities for all those
who teach or support learning, and integrating the fruits
of scholarship into all of its development programmes;
and by facilitating academic interaction with scholarly
networks within the UK as well as forging links with
scholars and practitioners of higher learning throughout
the world.
The investment in research and the designation of posts
as University Lecturerships reflect the importance that
the University attaches to enhancing learning and
teaching. The foundation of the Institute affords an
outstanding opportunity for people with vision, ambition,
resilience, and the right experience to participate in the
creation of an innovative centre for higher education
research and development within a demanding
intellectual environment.

Principal Research Fellow

The Principal Research Fellow will enjoy the unique
challenge of leading the Institute's research programme.
This will include formulating a research strategy in
consultation with the staff of the Institute and the
academic staff of the University; designing, supporting,
and conducting collaborative research initiatives;
developing opportunities for funded research; and
promoting links with higher education scholars
throughout the world. The Principal Research Fellow
will also be expected to offer guidance to the Institute's
development staff and to make an appropriate
contribution to the Institute's development programmes.
The postholder will be expected to possess a substantial
research record in learning and teaching in higher
education, an interest in the learning needs of high-
achieving students, and a commitment to engaging
teachers in practitioner-led research. This key
appointment will be made on the research staff salary
scale (RSIII), which is similar to the Oxford reader
scale, and the post-holder will be eligible to apply for
conferment of the title of Reader or Professor in the
University's annual exercise.
Salary scale £28,478 to £35,670 per annum, with a
discretionary scale to £40,671

Postdoctoral Research Officer

The Postdoctoral Research Officer will work with the
Principal Research Fellow to carry through the Institute's
research strategy. In addition to conducting collaborative
research within the Institute, the Research Officer will
play a leading role in promoting and supporting research
into learning and teaching to be carried out by the
academic staff of the University. The Research Officer
will also be expected to offer guidance to the Institute's
development staff and to make an appropriate
contribution to the Institute's development programmes.
The postholder will need to possess a broad knowledge
of educational research methods and the tact and
understanding to enable those with complementary
research skills to apply them to educational research
projects. It is an ideal post in which to develop further
research expertise on a wide variety of projects.
Research Staff 1A: salary scale £16,286 to £24,479

University Lecturership in Learning and Teaching
in the Sciences

The Lecturer in Learning and Teaching in the Sciences
will build upon the work of the current Educational
Development Officer in promoting collaborative
development activity with academic staff in the
University's science faculties. This may include provision
of seminars for academic staff, graduate tutors and
demonstrators; dissemination of subject-specific
research on learning and teaching; and advice and
support in planning, monitoring and evaluating learning
and teaching at departmental level. The Lecturer will be
expected to contribute to the Institute's research strategy
by undertaking research into learning and teaching in the
sciences, and to promote and support the Institute's
research strategy within the science divisions. The
successful candidate may currently be either an
academic in the sciences with a strong interest in learning
and teaching issues, or an educational development
specialist with a background in research or teaching in
the sciences.
University Lecturer: salary £17,238 to £35,670 per
annum (age-linked: automatic progression)

University Lecturership in Professional Education

This post presents an unusual opportunity to engage in
the development of both 'transferable skills' and learning
and teaching within a university environment. The
Lecturer in Professional Education will foster the
development of management and other professional
skills among the University's staff and graduate students,
investigating and implementing appropriate accreditation
arrangements. He or she will also promote the
development of teaching and related skills among part-
time tutors (particularly within the Department for
Continuing Education), academic-related and non-
academic staff, and graduate students. The Lecturer will
be expected to contribute to the Institute's research
strategy by undertaking research into professional or
vocational education. The successful candidate will have
a research record in some aspect of adult or
professional education or continuing professional
development, preferably with a particular focus on
higher education, and the ability to design and make a
substantial contribution to the delivery of appropriate
courses and seminars (whether accredited or not) for
staff at Oxford.
University Lecturer: salary £17,238 to £35,670 per
annum (age-linked: automatic progression)

Project Officer (Disability and Staff Development)

As a result of a successful bid to the Higher Education
Funding Council within the current disability initiative, the
Institute seeks to appoint a Project Officer to provide
strategically-designed, innovative staff development to
improve support for students with disabilities at Oxford.
The postholder will be supported by a project team
including members of the University’s Equal
Opportunities Office. We are seeking applicants with
excellent interpersonal skills, an interest in disability
issues, and the ability to coordinate, deliver and evaluate
a range of staff development activity. Experience of
working in Higher Education would be an advantage,
but is not essential. A comprehensive induction
programme will be provided to support the postholder in
establishing the project. This is a full time post, fixed
term for two years.
Academic-Related Administrative Grade 2: salary
£18,915 - £24,479

All of these posts (except where stated) are for a fixed
term of three years with the possibility of renewal
thereafter. To discuss any of these posts informally,
please contact Ms Rebecca Nestor, Head of Staff
Development, on (01865) 270562. For further
particulars, including details of how to apply, please
contact Mrs Luvena Wilson, telephone (01865)
270086, e-mail [log in to unmask] Further
particulars are also available on the University’s website
at www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp. The closing date for all
applications is 28 February 2000.
