In this matter, be thankful that you do not live in Canada. Revenue Canada
decided some time ago that driving to work and parking were considered
personal expenses. That is not newsworthy. More recently, they have
decided that if the institution is not charging "reasonable market value"
for parking, then parking becomes a taxable benefit! Moreover, THEY
determine "reasonable market value" - for a place such as Saskatoon, a
smaller and relatively inexpensive place to live, $25-30 CDN per month might
be a reasonable figure. However, RC's determinations are usually made based
on much larger centers, such as Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto, where
space for anything is at a premium.
You can see where this might present a problem. The twist of lime to the
story is that there is about a 50-70% success rate for legal challenges to
their rulings!
