Dear list members,
Following Roland's email enquiring about Generation of Electricity in
Sewers,
Cedo Maksimovic asked me to pass his message to Roland on to all list
members.
I am sure you will be interested in this method of generating
electricity, as one
of the ideas people have to come up with in crisis situations.
Best regards from the Elbe catchment

Subject: RE: Generation of Electricity in Sewers
Dear Roland
I am aware of a big number of such cases, applied during the recent war
in
Bosnia.
In the cities in which there was no electricity, people used the
following
"power generation systems":
a. access to sewer pipes (manholes in most of the cases) as "power
house"
b. improvised ("home made - DIY - do it yourself") "turbine" - usually
with
vertical axes.
c. electromotor (usually taken from a wash machine) as a "generator".
Depending on the flow and "head" a continuous - directly coupled "power
supply" that was "sufficient" for the basic needs - light at least. More
sophisticated cases involved some other elements such flow diversion,
"couplers" etc. Regular "maintenance" (mainly cleaning of the "turbine")
did
pose a slight problem, but there were also "sight specific" (almost
sustainable) solutions. Innovations would be welcome.
In some cities there were tens (if not hundreds) of such "mini hydro
power
plants" in use placed along sewer mains and urban streams. Some of them
may
have been kept (just in case).
There is an NGO in Banja Luka (Republic Srpska- Bosnia and Herzegovina)
named "6e&6i" (meaning in the enclosed file) which could be a suitable
local partner for a project in which the experience gained in the recent
troubled period could be acquired and used in a potential joint project.

Dear all
Sorry for crossposting.
I was wondering whether anyone has ever heard or was involved in a
project
that had the aim to produce electricity in sewer systems by using
wastewaster to power turbines? For example in drop manholes, vortex
drops or
steep sewers.
We have a 20 m stretch in our system that is already being used to
extract
heat from the wastewater by using heat exchangers, but so far I have
never
heard of a project that involved the generation of electricity.
Thanks for any replies
Regards, Roland
