Information for Scotland 2006

Finding Scotland: Transforming services through the Scottish Common Information
Environment

* How will people locate and access to Scotland's fast-growing digital
resources?

* Who needs to be taking action, what action needs to be taken, when do
we start?

Date: Friday 24 November 2006, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: A.K. Bell Library, Perth

Chair: Elaine Fulton (Director, Scottish Library and Information Council)

Speakers include: Shonaig MacPherson (Chair, National Trust for Scotland); Jon
Birger (Director, The Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority)

Cost: £50 plus VAT

Conference description:

There are a rapidly-growing range of digital resources, available through a
variety of portals, interfaces and websites. A common approach to storage, to
searching and to standards is needed, in order to best support our users.

Information for Scotland 2006 aims to bring together decision-makers and senior
staff - from archives, libraries, museums, local authorities and government - to
consider the challenges for Scottish citizens of access to information resources
available to them.

Information for Scotland will seek to derive a common understanding
of what we want to achieve for users and what needs to be done, particularly in
terms of national information policy, in order to deliver what is required.

Some of the issues to be considered are:

* Cultural entitlement - easy access to digital culture
* Co-ordination - different sectors working together for their common
customers
* Easy access to all information, wherever it's created and stored - thinking
globally, acting locally, getting the branding right
* Service delivery - a focus on how and why people will wish to use
information

The conference will begin by setting the scene - examining developments in
Europe, the needs of citizens for information and the demands of cultural
entitlement. A review of the issues that need to be addressed by decision-makers
to allow us to move forward for Scotland follows. Finally, there will be an
opportunity to explore the issues in more detail in breakout groups, stimulating
ideas for the wrap up discussion.

The desired outcome of the conference is a road map for supporting the common
information environment concept and taking developments forward across the
various sectors.

We would encourage you to take part in the discussion and help shape the future
information environment in Scotland. By the end of the day we hope that you will
have been stimulated by the discussion, and have contributed to the formulation
of the road map which will guide the information community. We also hope that
you will be enabled to make decisions within your organisations about commitment
to projects in this area.

Please come and help us transform electronic information services in Scotland.
