Dear All,
Thanks to everyone who attended the SUSCAG meeting last
Wednesday, it proved to be quite a success with both Ronald
Milne the Director of the Funding Council's Research
Support Libraries programme and Michael Anderson, the
Chairman, coming along to answer questions about the next
round of funding. I hope to have the minutes out as soon
as possible.
In the meantime all SUSCAG members are invited to
contribute to the SUSCAG response to a number of reports
affecting the archive community:
firstly - we are preparing a formal response to the HMC
survey 'Archives at the Millennium'. The HMC launched this
major enquiry into the archival health of the nation
earlier this year and they want to hear about the
strengths, weaknesses and pressing issues faced in our
sector of the archival community. Although this response
was due for the end of October, we have managed to obtain
an extension up to the end of November in order to give all
members the opportunity to contribute. Suzette Bell at
Edinburgh University has kindly volunteered to compile all
of our ideas and thoughts on the subject. Can we send
any relevant information to Suzette by 16 November.

In addition we need to draft a group response to the recent
report 'Towards a Strategic Bid for Lottery Funding for the
Heritage'. There is some concern that Universities are seen
as elites by the HLF and are at the bottom of the pile when
it comes to receiving funding. Our response to this report
is intended to point out the difficulties faced by
University archive and special collections when bidding for
Heritage Lottery Funding in order to persuade the HLF to
widen the criteria. If anyone has experience of bidding for
lottery funding, positive or negative, or opinions on these
issues please share your views with Pamela McIntyre of
Heriot-Watt University who will similarly compile a summary
response. All ideas to Pamela by 16 November, again we
need to respond by the end of the month.
