Conference: Football - A shared sense of belonging?

This conference is the conclusion of a three year Big Lottery funded research project carried out by Football Unites Racism Divides (FURD - www.furd.org) about the role of football in the lives of refugees and asylum seekers.
Please circulate amongst your networks.

The findings from the research will be outlined and supporting presentations will be provided by a panel of experts in the field. We will highlight examples of good practice and discuss barriers to working with new arrivals.
Confirmed speakers include:

Jim Steinke – Northern Refugee Centre
Kim Turcotte – Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
Mark Cummins – Rotherham United Community Sport Trust
Dr Max Mauro – Research: Refugees, Racism and Schoolboy Football
Dr Chris Stone – Football Unites Racism Divides
Dr Michael Skey – Author of ‘National Belonging and Everyday Life’

In addition, refugees and asylum seekers themselves will provide their own views about their sense of belonging and what football means to them.

There will be plenty of networking opportunities and the conference will be particularly suitable for individuals working in sport or community development roles and refugee support agencies.

Part of our aim is to provide an opportunity for students, academics and practitioners in these areas to exchange ideas.

Venue:
The U-Mix Centre
17 Asline Road
Lowfield
Sheffield
S2 4UJ

Times: 9:30am – 4:30pm

Lunch will be provided as well as tea/coffee/soft drinks
