Hi list
A colleague noted the similarities of certain English football club websites, and apparently a lot of them are produced by FL Interactive:
<http://www.football-league.co.uk/page/FLinteractive>
and his question was whether this king of thing was going to happen to College and University websites (single provider, cost savings). I guess not at the moment, but it does raise the question of whether institutions could benefit from shared web applications in specialized areas, such as sports.
There have been technical developments in this area, such as SportsML and derived database schema:
<http://www.iptc.org/site/News_Exchange_Formats/SportsML-G2>
<http://www.sportsdb.org/sd> (out of date, I believe)
Digging our and dusting off a preliminary specification, we might be looking at something like:

A section of the ... website might be devoted to the Sports Union, where we could show:
* descriptive information about the various sports (student and staff) in the College;
* competition information, including:
+ fixtures
+ results
+ match reports
+ league tables and cup progress
+ team and player statistics
+ squad lists
and so on;
* news and opinion;
* galleries;
* custom news feeds so that people can keep up to speed on their chosen team/competition/sport/player without having to visit the site first.
... the means to update this section.

There would be possibly be some data protection issues if player information was held centrally.
Sports data might be a useful, well-understood, non-business-critical, pathfinding project which could inform later shared services.
How are Scottish institutions publishing/syndicating sports content on/from their websites at the moment, or planning to?
