This document obviously pre-dates PDF/A, but is still relevant. Scanning a
document would give you a "PDF Image Only" file, if you OCR it you can get a
"PDF Searchable Image Exact" file (that is an image with hidden text). The
PDF files we are all aware of are "PDF Normal" files (or "PDF Formatted Text
and Graphics") but you can't scan into this format.
There are PDF/A equivalents of each of the above formats.

which is an old manual, but I've yet to find
