Luca,
Have a look at our software named WordStat at:
www.simstat.com/wordstat.htm
It provides about the same features as TextSmart as well as several other
ones. It allows you to combine quantitative variables (responses to closed
questions, sociodemographic information, etc.) and responses to open-ended
question in the same data file and explore the relationship between those 2
types of variables. You need to purchase Simstat (as statistical program )
in order to run WordStat (an addon for Simstat), but since Simstat can
import SPSS files and export to either SPSS/PC format or to several other
formats compatible with SPSS, exchange between SPSS and Simstat/WordStat
are rather easy. The cost for both programs is $278 plus S&H.
But please note that, like TextSmart, WordStat is a content analysis tools.
It does provide you with the ability to perform manual coding of documents,
but its main purpose is to perform automatic coding, and in order to do
this, you may need to construct your own categorization dictionary (but you
may also perform comparison of word usage without any categorization
dictionary).
If you are looking for a more traditional qualitative coding software
(manual coding and retrieval), them you may have to look at other existing
QDA software like Atlas-ti, Nvivo, Qualrus, MaxQDA, HyperResearch,
etc.. But I must say that we will start beta testing a new QDA software
very shortly. This new QDA software will provide basic QDA features found
in other programs as well as several features not found in existing
products. It will include, among other things, the ability to combine
manual coding with the automatic coding features found in WordStat. If you
want to participate to this beta test, you can contact me at
