I am currently involved in the planning of an extension to an acute
hospital. In calculating bed capacity, the method used is the "number
of cases X average length of stay" with some further refinement for 85%
occupancy (i.e. multiply by 100 and divide by 85) My query is that
length of stay (particularly in medical specialties) has a skewed
distribution, so "average length of stay" must be imprecise in that
context. Has anyone been involved in calculating acute bed capacity
recently and can give me advice on how to go about it?
