Awards etc aren't always impressive - I try to be unimpressed by them! - but
if anyone in Australia (that's a joke; I do know how big it is) is thinking
of not going I'd urge them to reschedule
I know that I miss a *tremendous amount in his work because I only
experience the poetry in translation and the sounds of a language of which I
know nothing. (The Chinese on the page, too, sometimes, of course; but I
learn almost nothing from that, much less from than I do from seeing /
hearing the performance of the text, where I can seek to infer form gesture
and expression and tone... but I may be getting all that wrong)
Even so, I will hear him when I can. Even not knowing much of the literary
context in which he writes or anything of the language, I get a lot out of
it. I know him slightly - to say Hi to and exchange small talk, no more -
and can say he's a really pleasant and entertaining person too. Go and see
him!
