Rodin's advice to Rilke is very much in my mind these days. Whether
to carry out the paradigm shift from the framework of oneself to the
strangeness of Other. I keep wondering whether to try it again. I
have grave qualifications about it cos I did exactly that about thirty
years ago and wrote a set of 'New Poems'. These poems, although perfectly
good, exist only in manuscript because I have no personal attachment
to them, they being Other, and have never felt any wish to preserve
them. In those days I was writing purely for myself without the slightest
thought of publication. I was learning the ropes. So now I debate
whether to experiment and try out the game again. I dont really know.
But then I might be forced to type up my thirty-year-old set for
comparison and I cant really be bothered. I have enough poems on
the Web as it is.
So my warning about Rodin's advice is that the poems may seem nothing
to do with you in future years after they are written. Quite alien.
And you might find a reluctance to accomodate them into your oeuvre.
