I think I'd better point out, for the record, that I wasn't being
Little Englandish, I just didn't know how much impact Pinter's demise
had elsewhere.
It was sad the way he died: beginning in 1963, after The Caretaker, he
fought against his illness, there are signs in The Homecoming, and No
Man's Land, but gradually he succumbed, even to writing bad poetry,
and marrying into the aristocracy, and helping to make socialism a
champagne laughing stock, how did Michael |Caine's schoolmate end up
like that, or how did Maurice Edelman either for that matter?
As Lenin said, statues are for pigeons to shit on, a Nobel
Laureateship is the equivalent of being turned into a living statue, I
recall Sartre's refusal, Patrick White's giving away of the money to
young writers, Beckett's horror say no more.
Best
