Ooops!! Sorry -- just as well I checked -- it was in last Sunday's Observer.
(Well, what's the difference? Especially to someone like Candice who must
be the only person in America to reference The Glasgow Herald's Sunday
extra!!) And don't even ask why I was reading it today, and didn't notice
the time-lapse.
The whole section is better than the Armitage garbage:

The interview itself is at:
http://www.observer.co.uk/review/story/0,6903,528982,00.html
In His Own Words ...
"Observer: What's the book really about?
Simon Armitage: Barney, the narrator, is representative of a certain
kind of dysfunctional male. I suppose I was writing about the situation that
a lot of mid-life males find themselves in: of not being able to attach to
the world in any significant way.
Obs: It's also what you might call a 'condition of England' novel."
If you still want to read on after that, proceed to the URL above. I can't
say it gets worse, as obviously that would be difficult to do.
... and a review of the novel that provoked the interview.

I wish I could say:
Enjoy!!
But I can't.
