The Women of Bellingen (warning: contains at least one rude word)
With one eyebrow lifted
(They have heard it all)
They listen to his bullshit story,
Loving and skeptical.
It's much the same to them -
Snakes, dicks or guns.
"That'd be right", they'll say:
"Now pull the other one."
*
Not quite spring chickens,
They sometimes look wistful
Staring into the mirror -
But the men find them beautiful
For all the white wisps
Eating into their gold.
*
With patient dainty fingers
They unpick what's become tangled
(Like this unfortunate tree-frog
Swaddled in dust and wool,
Lying as though spell-bound),
Ever warm and capable
Of soothing a frightened child
Or a distraught man,
But shield their own distress
Inside a tight corps of women.
*
Watching men fuck up
They have a good laugh,
Thickening calves and buttocks
Rallied at the distaff.
