Mainly I've used this list to keep and eye on some friends and acquaintances, chiefly Max, actually.
Who first departed from Auckland--to Melbourne--before I returned there and who I met up with again , intermittently over many, many years. Max and I were students together, doing MAs in English at University of Auckland, the year before were worked together at the Upper Symonds Street Post Office. I think Max got me the job there. He wasn't the only poet postie, in fact our office had something of a literary reputation. We delivered the word around the suburbs of Kingsland and Mt Eden. Walking the streets with our bags of letters, and parcels. As a matter of fact we--Susan and Ben and I -- lunched in Kingsland just the other day at The Shakey Isles, just a few hundred metres up New North Road ... Max was one of the most distinct and distinctive people I have known, and I am really sorry he's gone, taken away so carelessly ....

This is a terrible loss. I knew Max as a wonderful presence on our list,
and I offer condolences to those who knew him well. Devastating news. Like
Jill, I have been hovering recently due to the press of work challenges.
May his family be comforted now. Nothing easy about losing someone so great
and fine.
