Bournemouth University launches £226K biographic performative study on older gay and lesbian citizens in rural Britain

Several academics at Bournemouth University’s Centre for Qualitative Research have been selected to take part in the ‘New Dynamics of Ageing’ programme, the UK’s largest study of the quality of life of older people. This seven-year research initiative, the largest research programme on ageing to date in the UK, is a unique collaboration between five UK Research Councils – ESRC, EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC and AHRC – supporting scientists from across the disciplines to work together on research which will benefit the quality of life of older people.

Dr Kip Jones, Reader in Qualitative Research at Bournemouth’s Centre for Qualitative Research and The Media School, will lead one of the projects that will listen to the life stories of gay and lesbian older adults living in rural South West England or Wales using the Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method. Citizen panels will then create a script based upon the stories for a widely distributed film, directed by professional filmmaker, Josh Appignanesi.

Jones explained: "Gay and lesbian older adults too often are invisible; combined with rural living, these individuals are particularly vulnerable to isolation. This opportunity to listen to their stories and then produce a film based on their lives will mean that such individuals will no longer remain unseen. The project will test theories about cross-pollination between the arts and sciences by using in-depth biographic data to inform performative dissemination of social science research”.

The interview stage is just beginning and the project welcomes volunteers for life story interviews. Rural background (South West England and Wales), age and diversity are important factors. Please contact Dr Jones if you are interested in participating in the interviews or Reflective Team panels later in the process. [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
