The MSC DECISION SCIENCES at the UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER integrates in a
practical and useful manner material from management, statistics,
operational research, computing, marketing and finance. It is somewhere
between an MBA and an MSc in Operations Research in mathematical and
technical level.
Most students are employed (or hoping to be) in a government department or
business, working with data or technical management problems. They want to
extend their capabilities in the above areas and probably enhance their
promotion prospects.
Software used on the course normally includes SPSS or SAS, DATA, Simul8,
Crystal Ball, iThink, LINDO, MS Access and MS Visual Basic.
The full-time course involves attendance on Tuesday and Thursday between
1.30 pm and 8.30 pm for nine months, and there is a project that runs
normally between July and September, after the exams. The part time course
is on Tuesdays in the first year and Thursdays in the second.
Available modules typically include:
Business dynamics and strategic modelling
Statistical modelling with SPSS
Computing for business and management
Operational Research Methods
Multivariate statistics and marketing decision support
Statistical data mining
Computer simulation in business and management
Medical Statistics and Experimental Design
Management accounting and financial modelling
Advanced topics in Statistics and OR
For admission, you need an honours degree in a subject containing a fair
amount of mathematics, statistics or operations research. Degrees in
subjects such as science and engineering, geography, economics and business
studies usually satisfy this criterion. We expect students to have some
experience in the use of computers e.g. MS Windows, Word and Excel. In
addition, you need a recognised English qualification such as GCSE, IELTS,
TOEFL or equivalent.
