I do ask for operational staff , and also about alcohol- I then explain
about our smoking policy (which is very prohibitive) and also that their
habits may significantly affect their abilities at the next stage of
recruitment (which is a fitness test).
I think that it's a significant factor esp if someone is coming into
contact with respiratory sensitisers, all in all it's a brief question
which can be followed up or not dependant on the job that the person is
going for. It wouldn't affcet any decision re "fitness" for work for me

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Smoking questions
Morning
can I ask if any one asks potential employees about smoking habits on
their
pre-employment health questionnaires?
We currently do not but wonder if we should or could?
Do we need to know such information as would it have any influence on
a 'fitness to work' decision? If they are working in an area with
respiratory sensitisers then a heavy smoking habit could be useful
information to have, but for example, a nurse in Day Hospital, do we
really
need to know if they smoke or not?
Their is an angle to adopt the health promotion stance by asking if they
smoke and discussing as needed but if someone smokes it's their choice,
and
I guess ultimately if they felt this maty jeopardise their offer of a
job
they may be economical with their answers on the health declaration
form.
What do others do/think about this?
regards
Glenn
