To Sue Manthorpe
I'm sorry I dont know of anyone who specialises in RSI, but if you ask
either the OH consultant DR Graneek at the Marsden Hosp or OH Medical
Director at Kings College should be able to point you in the right
direction, and they are both very helpful.
Also do you have any info on whats happening with the document on health
clearance for serious communicable diseases which was out for consultation
earlier this year, I presume this is the standard protocol you mean, it
would be great to have this as we would all finally be doing the same
screening!!!
However I do find a lot of the advice and information so far from the DOH is
very much open to interpretation which is causing problems with the Smart
cards and other screening e.g.Hep B/C

Dear Lucy and list.2 points
1)
I have an occupational health nurse who appears to be suffering symptoms of
rsi. Does anyone know of an OH physician with a specialist interest in this
area I could contact to discuss this. I am at the stage where a medical
assessment is required.
2) I have been reading with interest all of the comments on Ivs samples and
immunisations etc. I am vice chair of a London NHS group involved in
discussing immunisations and smartcards etc and will be sending our
recommendations to the DOH. Most of the trusts in London Piloted the
smartcard and have had an input it trying to standardise it! I would
welcome your comments etc. on imms and would be willing to keep you up to
date with our findings. It is hoped that we could eventually produce a
standard protocol for all NHS OH services on Imms etc. this would hopefully
cut down workload as we would all be able to accept each others immunisation
information on staff as we would have similar procedures in place ( ?!)
Regards
Sue Manthorpe.

This sounds as if it could be a postural issue. You could check if their
symptoms are reproduced by extension of the neck and rotation of extended
arms. If so, it could be cervical compression, which may resolve with
physio.
If they operate from a clinic, have they got ergonomic stools to sit on when
taking blood? If they are going round from ward to ward, have they been
advised about considering their own posture and asking the patients to move
to accommodate them?
It shouldn't be unresolvable!

Hi All
I have been asked to do an independent assessment on 2 research nurse who
have developed RSI as a result of taking large volumes of blood for reserach
purposes using 60 ml syringes.( up to 2000ml/day)
I understand that despite adjustments to thier working practices, they are
still having problems.
Has anyone come across a similar problem amongst phelobotomists and if so
could you recommend any alternative equipment to large syringes that could
be used to take blood for such purposes
I am seeing them tomorrow so any thoughts would be most welcome ASAP
Chloe
