Hi Anthony and all,
>>> If new media curating can be about contemporary 'relations of
representation', then the tendency of new media curators to privilege
the 'programmer' (as traditional curators privilege the artist) begins
to look like mystification: a alliance between artist and curator, as
magician and priest of new media, to defend a hierarchy which the
proliferation of technology has already helped undermine. However, if
emphasis falls on the technology and not the relations it mediates,
the tendency to celebrate new media revolutions begins to look like a
utopian affirmation of the marketing hype.
Your preoccupations are valid, but I have some remarks. I don't think
the curatorial practice should give "privileges" or "emphasis", neither
for Subjects or Objects. The curator should focus in simply build
knowledge. Maybe it could be benefic re-think the word "curator" and its
ramifications. I think Guattari's "agency" is broader than "structure",
"system", "form", etc. and could help the discussion. Agency holds
heterogeneous components, either of biological order, or machinic,
gnosiological, imaginary. Certainly, I'm not proposing a semantic
trade-off, as Bruce Sterling has been doing with the word "spime"; I'd
like just to stress the word, due its notation inference. In my opinion,
curatorial process has nothing to do with cultural nepotism. It is an
ongoing reciprocal process of arising knowledge.
All the best,
Guilherme Kujawski
