an exhibition to open a cycle of exhibition, education, and performance projects on the TECHNE platform—
a long-term strategic initiative of ROSIZO-NCCA dedicated to the technology and innovative practices in contemporary art.

In the classical era, the word techne (τέχνη) was used in particular for works of art that were created with various instruments. At the beginning of the 20th century, when technologies evolved and moved beyond the means of production and fixation of reality, the term technological art appeared. The art critic and historian Frank Popper defined the new movement to be a result of the fundamental integration of art and technology.
The TECHNE platform represents a foray into the history of relations between the contemporary artist and new media, new artistic tools of technological kind. This is a years-long program of exhibition, education, and performance projects providing a deeper insight into the various fields of technological art: generative art (2017), interactive art (2018), algorithmic art (2019), bioart (2019), kinetic art (2020), network art (2020), and the robotic art (2021).
Exhibition projects of the TECHNE platform fully represent international contemporary scene of technological art. Each of the exhibitions is to highlight the most significant facts, events, artists, and researchers who contributed to its formation. Artistic and research materials will be prepared both for audience already familiar with the current practices, and for those just beginning to develop interest in it.
During the preparation of the platform’s exhibitions, Russian contemporary artists, technology experts, and researchers collaborated by the ROSIZO-NCCA curators will be developing a series of fundamentally new projects for the Russian art community. The TECHNE platform operation is mainly aimed at active integration of the notion of technological art into the contemporary cultural context, supporting Russian investigators working with new technologies, discovering new names and the continual creation of new artworks.
The platform’s premiering exhibition that is to open as soon as December 17, 2017 provides an introduction to the context of the technological art and present and exhibition of the landmark graphic artworks, art objects, and video installations by prominent Russian and international artists. Among them—Bulat Galeyev, Soviet media art pioneer and the founder of the legendary Prometheus Institute; artist and the founder of video art Nam June Paik, audiovisual genius Ryoichi Kurokawa from Japan; media artist Dmitry ::vtol:: Morozov, known around the world for his robotic and sound installations; generative video creator Jeremy Bailey from Canada; visioneering conceptual artist Dmitry Prigov—and many others.
The background of the emergence of technological art in its various manifestations is represented by the works of Russian art classics such as Petr Bely or Francisco Infante-Arana, as well as the key Russian art groups—Collective Actions and Bluesoup. Special projects by Ryoichi Kurokawa and Dmitry ::vtol:: Morozov, featured at the exhibition TECHNE. Prologue, graphically show the relationship between the contemporary artist and new media.
Ryoichi Kurokawa’s unfold.alt installation provides an audiovisual experience bringing a spectator to odd corners of the universe and the mysteries of its origin, and broaden their vision of it. The artwork was created in collaboration with Vincent Minier, an astrophysicist at the Research Institute of the Fundamental Laws of the Universe based in Paris.
The artist was granted an opportunity to explore the Institute’s scientific data—his work was inspired by the researches concerning star formation and evolution of star clusters in a time interval of 10 billion years.
Sirenes, another impressing project by Ryoichi Kurokawa, incudes five audiovisual artworks, exploring the data aesthetics. This is a collection of visual and sound compositions, whose intensity fluctuates as in relation to the fate of global markets—the more the economy fails, the more complex the coupled visuals of the video installation become
The special project of the exhibition—Open Laboratory by Dmitry Morozov (::vtol::)—is a total installation and at the same time—the studio of a contemporary media artist, filled with all the necessary instruments and tools for creating new artworks, as well as the unfinished pieces under construction. The laboratory will not only provide an insight into the process of creating technological art—it is also to become a procedural space—during the exhibition the artist will be developing his new project (Kola Superdeep), premiering on January 26, 2017.
The TECHNE platform mainly aims at conceptualization and practical exploration of the relations between technology and art, which is going to be accomplished in the course of its first project’s intensive parallel program—the exhibition TECHNE. Prologue. Trained mediators, our guides in the world of new media art, will take the audience to the special exhibition tour. Lecture programme featuring Antonio Geusa, Olga Remneva, Alexander Serenko and others will narrate the history and theory of different movements of technological art, presenting the current practices and providing the viewer with the keys for interpretation of the exhibited artworks. A series of public portfolio-revues will be held to present a young Russian art scene associated with generative technologies.
Creative workshops of the contemporary artists—Dmitry Morozov, Egor Kraft and Ildar Yakubov—are created to form a community around the platform for collaborative work on new projects in the field of the current interdisciplinary culture. The musical programme schedules events connected with a technological element in contemporary music; the exhibition opening will feature audiovisual live performance by VARVARA (project by Lisa Mamonova, member of the iconic techno club Rabitza).
The parallel program of the TECHNE. Prologue will highlight Anna Santomauro as a special guest, who is the curator of Arts Catalyst, a British art community known for its unique projects in art, technology, and science. On December 15, 2017, Anna will give a public talk together with Natalia Fuchs, the curator of the exhibition platform TECHNE— the event will be dedicated to the global context of modern innovative practices in the field of contemporary art.

The creation of the TECHNE platform as a whole, as well as the opening of the first exhibition of the project in particular, is a unique event for the Russian art life. For the first time, the technological art will be presented at this scale in a long-term exhibition program of the state institution. Contemporary culture and aesthetics are inconceivable without understanding a place of technology in our lives and the way that the actors of contemporary art scene interact with technology as expressive means. Technology extends not only the creation but also perception of art, it provides many possibilities in art field. Equally, technology is rapidly developing and changing, new technology instantly becomes a common tool or an out of date thing.
