Remediating the Social
 
3rd and final CALL FOR SUBMISSION OF ARTWORKS
 
The Electronic Literature as a Model of Creativity and Innovation in
Practice (ELMCIP) research project invites submissions for an electronic
literature and digital arts commissioning programme. Selected works will be
presented in an exhibition and performance event as part of the final ELMCIP
project conference, Remediating the Social, in Edinburgh, November 2012.
 
ELMCIP welcomes proposals for installations, artworks and performances that
address how network-based creative practice can effect and reflect upon
community formation and the role of creativity in social ontologies.
Submitted works will engage "born digital" literary and artistic practices.
This can include works that employ generative, interactive, networked and/or
hypermedia techniques. Works which could exist without the computer being
involved in their production AND diffusion will not be considered. Projects
that engage liveness and the performative in media are especially welcome.
 
Remediating the Social will be hosted by Edinburgh College of Art, in
collaboration with New Media Scotland and University College Falmouth,
within the framework of the ELMCIP research project. The event will be held
at Inspace, a purpose-built research and exhibition facility at the
University of Edinburgh, fully instrumented to facilitate engagement with
developments in new technologies, scientific research and creative practice.
Site specific proposals will be considered and are encouraged. The
exhibition will continue after the conference for three weeks.
 
The conference programme will consist of expert presentations, across a
range of disciplines and modes of inquiry, addressing examples of creative
communities that have formed around various practices, media and discourses.
Case studies, papers and panels, discussing examples arising from the ELMCIP
project and other contexts will be presented. The conference will be
web-cast, allowing for remote attendees to freely monitor events and put
questions to conference, highlighting mediating technologies in the
formation of networked communities. There will be a separate call for
conference papers and presentations later in 2011.

Submissions:
 
Submissions, in PDF format, should include:
·      250 word abstract describing the conceptual and artistic details of
the work
·      A4 page outlining technical requirements and budget for developing
and mounting the work
·      Biographical statement of no more than 250 words
The proposal should be sent as a single PDF file and should not exceed 10
megabytes in size. The technical description should include clear indication
of technical and other resource requirements, duration (if applicable) and
space requirements. Wherever possible the commissioners will seek to ensure
that the necessary equipment and resources will be available for accepted
works, although this will depend on the requirements of each individual
project. Visual evidence of the proposed work, including diagrams,
documentation and/or simulations, would be appreciated. This should consist
of a web page containing the material, with the URL indicated in the
submission, or as part of the PDF proposal (noting the 10 megabyte limit on
fie size). Submissions will only be accepted electronically.
 
Proposals will be peer reviewed. Authors and producers of shortlisted works
will be notified soon after May 31, 2011, and the curatorial committee will
liaise with them to assure optimal presentation and the fit of each work in
the overall programme of the event. A final selection of works will follow
and a number of the proposals will be selected to be supported as
commissioned works. This support will only be available for works that have
not yet been produced and which the curatorial committee consider to have
exceptional artistic quality, thematic relevance and logistical viability.
