Thanks Andrew and Martin.
I was visiting relations last month in Barnsley and the headgear lights were
on. I completed my underground training at Barnsley Main in 1964 before
moving to Wharncliffe Woodmoor Nos 4 & 5. The training face was almost six
feet high (we were told by the training deputy that this was the old
Barnsley Bed seam. Some of the gates were bricked up and sealed, the deputy
also said that this was were the 1866 disaster took place. In the four
months I trained there water was not a problem, not like some other mines
were miners were paid (water money) or allowed to go home early because they
were so wet. As Martin said it makes a nice site. Go to the top of Kendry
Hill, and you will see a huge Angle in flight to her back is the mine, in
her arms is a young miner. I hope many other councils take Barnsley lead and
preserve these sites that are fast disappearing.
Thanks for all your help
Barry
