The Northern Mine Research Society is pleased to announce that it has just
placed a number of its important MINING DATABASES in the ‘Online resources’
section of its website (http//www.nmrs.co.uk).
The principal ones are:-
1. Mines of coal and other stratified minerals in Yorkshire from
1854
This is a ‘lite’ version of a database developed as a research tool for the
NMRS. It covers the three Ridings of pre-1974 Yorkshire, which means that
mines around Todmorden, which is geologically part of the Lancashire
coalfield, are included, as are the detached Ingleton coalfield and the
various localised, non-Coal Measures coalfields in the Pennines.
This database is the first comprehensive chronology for Yorkshire’s mines of
coal, fireclay, ganister, ironstone, sand, sandstone and whinstone during
the last 150 years. Earlier material will be added as it becomes available.
2. Britain’s Nationalised collieries from 1947
Another ‘lite’ version of a database developed for the NMRS. It lists the
mines taken into state control on Vesting Day, January 1st 1947, and
establishes a chronology for the decline of the post-war coal industry by
giving dates of mergers and closures.
3. Metalliferous Mines in the Yorkshire Dales
A ‘lite’ version of the Society’s site index, which gives the name and
location of the principal mines as well as their dates of closure.
The databases are supported with explanatory notes and details of sources.
