Applications are invited for the position of Director of the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU). The NPEU is an internationally recognised, multi-disciplinary research unit attached to the Department of Public Health, University of Oxford, which, as part of the community based clinical
subjects, obtained a 5* rating in the 2001 RAE. The NPEU, established by the Department of Health (DH), undertakes research about improving health and welfare of women and infants through studies of pregnancy, childbirth and newborn babies as well as long term outcomes. The annual budget is
approximately £1.5 million comprising both the core funding from the DH and grants and contracts from other funders. Although the DH funding for the NPEU covers services provided in England, its research and collaborative links are world-wide and its work has influenced national and international
policy an
The Director might come from any of the disciplines central to the work of the NPEU: Epidemiologist, Social Scientist, Health Economist, Statistician, Obstetrician, Midwife or Paediatrician provide
d they have the appropriate skills and experience as outlined in the job description. The Director
will either hold the grade of Senior Clinical Research Fellow (£52,640-£68,505) or that of Academi
c Related Researcher Scale IV (£39,394-£45,338) depending on whether the post is filled by someone
with clinical qualifications. The contract will be for five years in the first instance.
