The deadline is approaching for nominations to the John Thackray Medal,
awarded annually by the Society for the History of Natural History to
recognize an outstanding contribution in the history or bibliography of
natural history, realized in the previous twelve months (i.e., within the
2004 calendar year). The award can be made to an individual or a team.
Recognition may be for a piece of work (e.g. the cataloguing of an archive
collection), a publication (e.g., book or journal article), and exhibition,
or other relevant activities.
This medal was instituted in 2000 to commemorate the life and work of the
late John Thackray, former president of the Society and enthusiastic scholar
in the history of natural history.
Details of the Society's prizes are available on its Web site
http://www.shnh.org/ABT_awards_TM.html
or from the Secretary of the Society <[log in to unmask]>.
Only members of the Society can make a nomination. Self-nomination is
discouraged.
To ensure no worthy work goes unnoticed, I am happy to receive news of
plausible items so that I can exercise my own judgement, as a member of the
Society, regarding possible nomination. Or, other members of the Society's
Council can be contacted in the same way.
Joe
