The British Society for the History of Science
**** Ivan Slade Prize 1999 *****
The British Society for the History of Science is pleased to announce
the results of the 1999 Ivan Slade Prize, awarded for the best essay
(published or unpublished) making a critical contribution to the
history of science.
First prize (GBP300) is awarded to Sander Gliboff (Northwestern
University) for ‘Gregor Mendel and the Laws of Evolution,’ published
in History of Science 37 (1999), 217-235.
Runner-up prizes (GBP150 each) are awarded to:
John Henry (Edinburgh University) for ‘Animism and Empiricism:
Copernican Physics and the Origins of William Gilbert’s Experimental
Method,’ to appear in Journal of the History of Ideas (2001)
and
David Kaiser (MIT) for ‘Stick-Figure Realism: Conventions,
Reification and the Persistence of Feynman Diagrams, 1948-1964,’
Representations 70 (2000), 49-86.
