PhD Studentship Opportunity
GP and patient perspectives on direct patient reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions
The project: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are common and health professionals are encouraged to report serious reactions and any suspected reactions to recently marketed medicines to the UK medicines regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, (MHRA) through the Yellow Card Scheme (YCS).1 Patients and the wider public have been able to report ADRs directly to the MHRA via the YCS since 2005.
Patient perceptions of suspected ADRs often differ from those of HPs, but patient reports are recognised as contributing positively to monitoring of medicines safety.2 A major evaluation of the YCS found some doctors dismissed reporters' views on suspected ADRs and discouraged some from reporting.2 Patient perceptions can contribute to dissatisfaction with medicines and non-adherence, leading to poor outcomes, therefore health professional attitudes need to acknowledge patients' views. The evaluation recommended researching the knowledge and attitudes of health professionals towards patient reporting of ADRs, and evaluating approaches to address learning needs.2
This project will focus on both GP and patient perspectives of patients' ability to identify and report ADRs. It involves collaboration between the Medway School of Pharmacy, Peninsula Medical School (University of Exeter) and the Centre for Health and Social Studies (University of Kent, Canterbury).
