The Women's Film and Television History Network, UK-Ireland has started up our weekly blog after a summer hiatus. For the most recent post sent to the WFTHN list serve, see the information below.
Our latest blog is from our found Christine Gledhill, giving us an introduction and overview of the Women's Film Pioneer Database: 'Women Film Pioneers’ international database, covering women working across the world in silent cinema — an eagerly anticipated initiative but arduous in the making — is now up and running, housed at Columbia University in New York, where it is curated by director, Jane Gaines, manager, Kate Saccone, and a group of dedicated graduate student researchers.'
The blog includes information on how to use the database, new elements in the database, media references to the database and, importantly, a call for more of us to contribute entries on women who worked in the UK/Ireland during the silent period - only 19 are in the database so far. This is an invaluable resource for all of us, and I encourage you to get to know it if you don't already.
And if you think the silent period isn't what you are interested, Christine asks us to ponder this: 'when do women filmmakers cease to be "pioneers" - perhaps never?' Which is exactly why our network thinks about women's film history from the very beginning through to today and into the future. To improve our present and to change our future, we have to know our history.
